Reflections
I use colored file folders, card stock, cardboard, and art paper to experiment with color, contrast, pattern, shape, and composition until I have found what to me feels like harmony, a balance of movement and stillness. In creating a collage, I begin with the idea of an image and then follow the evolving piece, allowing it to speak to me about where it needs to go and what needs to happen next. The result is always different than the original conception, sometimes radically so, and what emerges when the moment is right is always genuinely surprising. If the collages move you in some way, inspire something in you, then you and I have made a connection that can light up the experience of being alive.
The collages are, in many cases, only a step in the art making process. When I complete a piece, I take it to Pearl Printing, where I work with Brian Carter to make giclée fine art prints. The fidelity with which he prints them maintains the collage quality with shadows and depth so that it is hard to tell sometimes whether it’s an actual collage or a print. As beautiful as they are, it may be understood that the actual finished art work is the print, and not the collage, which may be understood as just a step in the process of creating a print.
I welcome your questions and of course, any interest in purchasing original collages, full-size prints, 11×14” reproductions, smaller prints on 8×10 art board suitable for framing, or 5×7 greeting cards.
